Master (Mistress?) Storyteller: Ani DiFranco Weaves Tales and Tunes

You know that parlor game people play asking: “If you could have dinner with ANYONE who would it be?”

If the parameters were set limiting the number solely to people who are currently alive, there’s no question that Ani DiFranco would sit high on my list.

So when my pal Brian Zisk asked me if I wanted to head for Emeryville, CA a week or so ago to hear Ani give an intimate concert, I didn’t need to think twice.

It was a remarkable show – both in its true intimacy (there were about 50-60 people in the room) as well as the content. It was almost all new material from the album Ani’s been working on for, as she said, “for fricking ever”. In spite of being blissfully married and a mom with a three-year-old, the sass and moxie of this articulate artist seems merely to have gained power.
